The first step to become an approved fist aider as defined by the Health and Safety (first aid) regulations 1981 is to attend an Fist Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course. Only
on successfully completion of the course will first aiders be deemed to
have the required competence and qualification to administer first aid in
the workplace. A certificate will be issues and this will be valid for a 3
year period. First aiders will be required to renew their training every 3
years by again completing the appropriate course. To ensure first aiders
maintain their skills it is recommended an annual half day refresher
course is completed but this is not a mandatory requirement. First
